Today Dior is one of the most popular luxury brands in the world. With a huge clientele from celebrities to the royals, Dior has surely established a name for itself.
From the very beginning of its days in Paris to its gradual expansion globally, Dior has never stopped whisking people away with its innovative approach to fashion & style. Let us have a look at some of the most monumental phases in the past 72 years of Christian Dior.
The New Look – Christian Dior’s first Spring/Summer collection
The New Look was a revolutionary era for women back in the forties. Along with that, the New Look brought back the spirit of haute couture in France as it was considered glamorous and young-looking. After the war, Christian Dior wanted to bring back the romantic aspects of women’s clothing. Whittled waist, exaggerated hips, gentle shoulders and an enhanced bust were prominent characteristics of the New Look. The most popular style from the new look was ‘The Bar Suit’ and encompasses the central theme of the collection. The suit silhouette very delicately showcases the feminine body however the tailored jacket adds just the perfect touch of structure to the look.
Miss Dior – The First Dior Fragrance
Christian Dior wanted a fragrance that complemented his ‘New Look’ collection. He wanted a seductive scent that enhanced the look & feel of the haute couture dress that shaped her curves. He wanted to make “a perfume that smells of love“. The perfume is a green chypre, in which the top notes of clary sage and bergamot sparkle over a rose heart, against a pulsating warm base of green moss and patchouli. The perfume is named after his sister, Catherine Dior.
The Christian Dior Shoe
Roger Vivier was working as a freelancer in Paris, when Christian Dior opened a shoe department in his salon. In 1953 Christian Dior appointed Roger Vivier as the head designer of the department. From 1953 to 1963 Roger Vivier designed all the shoe collections for Dior.
The Dior Rouge Lipstick
Christian Dior always wanted to make women not only look beautiful, but also feel happy. He created his first makeup product in 1953, a revolutionary couture lipstick called Rouge Dior. While historically red was a color that symbolizes one’s social status, Dior created a revolution in red with his Rouge Dior red lipstick. He wanted it to become a symbol for feminine empowerment and the art of seduction.
In 1957, Christian Dior appeared on the cover of Time magazine on March 4th. Shortly after that Mr. Christian Dior died from his third heart attack while vacationing in Italy. And Yves Saint Laurent was appointed as the artistic director of the house of Dior. Yves Saint Laurent produced widely popular collections in his early years with Dior. He started to become more and more daring and risky with his designs. Laurent left Dior in 1960 when he was called to the army.
Dior & John Galliano
John Galliano was appointed the new creative director in October 1996. Galliano received critical acclaim for his Haute Couture and ready-to-wear collections. He has been one of the most influential creative directors at Dior. On 1 March 2011, John Galliano was removed as creative director following his anti-Semitic comments.
After John Galliano, Raf Simons was handed the remains of the house. It was during his period that we saw some of the most iconic modern fashion looks from the Dior double pearl earrings to the iconic heels. His collections always took inspiration from Christian Dior’s initial collection.
After Raf Simons, Maria Grazia Chiuri was appointed the creative director of the house of Dior. Having made headlines with her debut collection – which included feminist slogan T-shirts – her second couture collection shows her empowering manifesto in a less explicit and more thematic manner, nodding to female explorers.
Dior is a brand that now synonymous to luxury fashion & seeing its history, once can truly understand why. These 72 years have given us some amazing & revolutionary fashion moments. And I can’t wait to see where Dior is headed with Grazia Chiuri’s vision for the brand.
